This
workshop is designed to introduce and develop the knowledge, skills and characteristics of effective leadership in outdoor
environments and the SAR profession. The course will cover small unit leadership, leadership styles, leadership traits, leadership
characteristics, leading volunteers, and conflict resolution. Basic skills will include leadership positions, planning, execution,
unit travel, dangerous terrain, environmental considerations, leadership responsibility, unit self-rescue, and other necessary
leadership skills. Course utilizes active learning that requires participants to work through scenarios and be challenged
with hands on, situation based (and real life) course work.
The similarity between SAR (Search & Rescue),
Expedition and Outdoor leadership allows for a comprehensive and in depth study of effective leadership. Standards and curriculum
are adapted from both the NASAR SARTECH I (Crewleader), the National Outdoor Leadership School and the Fortune Bay Expedition
Team's Expedition Leader Track. The workshop is valuable for SAR Team Crew Leaders, SAR Team Chiefs, Expedition Leaders,
and outdoor trip leaders.
