The corridor of the White Pine Trail was formerly the Penn Central Railroad, also known as the Michigan Northern. The Right of Way was purchased from the Michigan Department of Transportation and dedicated on July 20, 1994, the White Pine Trail State Park is managed by the Parks and Recreation Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The White Pine Trail is:
- Michigan's longest rail-to-trail Linear State Park.
- 92 miles from Comstock Park, near Grand Rapids, to Cadillac.

The White Pine Trail is planned to connect to:

- Kent Trails, through the Grand Rapids Trail System
- Musketawa Trail, Hart-to-Montague State Park, Ottawa County Trail System
- Paul Henry Thornapple Trail
-The White Pine Trail crosses the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail in Reed City

Open to snowmobiles from Cadillac South to Russell Road, (between Rockford and Cedar Springs). The White Pine Trail connects to numerous other snowmobile trails.

The White Pine Trail crosses 14 open deck bridges along its five-county length. The largest bridge is 319 feet across the Muskegon River, north of Big Rapids.

The northern point of White Pine Trail is Cadillac, the southern point is Comstock Park, north of Grand Rapids.

White Pine Trail currently is free to use. Any future White Pine Trail State Park fees will be set by Michigan State Parks, Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division.
