The Yakpedition 2002 (Kayak Expedition) took place on the Agawa River, Ontario, Canada. Dubbed the world’s longest portage, due to the low late summer water level. It was a difficult and trying trip. Most teams probably would have considered a rescue, because of the slow progress made in the low river. Most paddlers descend the Agawa river in the spring or fall because of higher water, but the Fortune Bay Company Expeditionary Team decided this trip would be a decidedly challenging endeavor in physical and mental tenacity.

Departing early morning August 16th, two team members boarded the Algoma Central Passenger Train in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario with 13 Kayaks. The Remainder of the team drove north about 160 km to the Montreal Falls, a small logging camp near the Agawa Canyon. After a brief encounter with a security guard at the Montreal River Harbor, the team arrived in Montreal Falls and waited 2 hours past the scheduled pick up time to catch the train. After boarding the train, it was a 45 minute ride north to the Agawa Canyon where the team put in and began a very long portage to Lake Superior.
