Papa's Descent

Papa (Chuck Hill) descends Sleeper falls during the Yakpedition 2002
This same waterfall was a great "dive and jive" two years ago but I landed on a boulder this time, turned sideways and did a wet exit. Not to be deterred, I slogged my way between two huge rocks, pumped 'er out and jumped back in. The effort was worth it as I maneuvered around the "rock garden" " diggin' and slappin'. Now there was only 30 meters between me and calmer water. Before it was a real rush as the river was about 8 inches higher but today it was an exercise in dodge 'em with the rocks. The river narrowed through a chute between the canyon walls and emptied me into a calm oxbow near the west shore. I was wet, tired from bailing, my yak was 1/4 full of water but I made it and hadn't lost any gear. As I neared shore I noticed Tony had also realized this might be a good time for a break. My lunch of choice that day? A can of Vienna sausages, cheese crackers, and Gorp.
