Winter Land Navigation and Camp out

(Beginner's Course)

When: January 24th and 25th (Saturday and Sunday)

Time: 9:00 am Saturday January 24th to 5pm January 25th.

Course Location: North Country Trail Association School House and the Manistee National Forest, White Cloud Area (Map and Directions)

Why: The course will be more fun than serious, but you will learn a lot. This course is a workshop and team building exercise designed to introduce participants to many forms of land navigation and winter travel and camping. Skills development will be used on future expeditions and activities. This course also requires an overnight camp.

What: Learn some useful navigation techniques, ropework, and have a great time with adventure and friendship. The course demonstrates land navigation skills, orienteering, map reading and ropework skills used in wilderness travel and rescue.

The Course will cover:

1) Map Reading
2) Compass Reading
3) Global Positioning System use
4) Dead Reckoning
5) Improvised navigation techniques
6) Hauling equipment
7) Winter Dress, movement and survival
8) Basic ropework
9) Camping, team building and a great time

Four hours of indoor classroom instruction, the rest is outdoors.

What to bring: Winter clothing, winter hiking boots, food, drink, camp chair, load the vehicle - we will have them at the campsite. Contact Papa if you would like more suggestions.
